Social Media Team, Syracuse University
In Fall 2011, the Syracuse Student Social Media team was launched. SU made the decision to institutionalize social media, held within the marketing department, and the Director of Digital and Social Media pushed for an all-student team. The 12 of us, and our director and assistant director, founded 44Social, which handles all of SU’s official social media presences, including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Foursquare, Tumblr, YouTube and Google+.
The student team covers Twitter and Facebook in shifts. While on shift, I am responsible for finding content and responding to @mentions or comments.
Team members also take ownership over other components to SU’s social media footprint. Last spring, I launched SU’s official Pinterest page, which has been featured in Mashable, Educational Marketing Group and Online Colleges. In addition to boards like Flashback and Instagram, I’ve pinned several live events, including the Dalai Lama’s One World Concert and Commencement.
I’m also the Foursquare Campus Rep, and take ownership over SU’s Foursquare page. Last year, my co-rep and I organized and tagged all the Foursquare venues, collaborated with Alumni Relations to create a game-watching list, and hosted a Lemonade Pong event on the quad for Foursquare Day. My experience as a rep culminated when my new co-rep and I were able to meet and interview Dennis Crowley when he visited campus.
Other interesting experiences as a member of the social media team include responding to crises, like the Bernie Fine incident last fall, and live-tweeting basketball games. As a new team, we’re learning a lot from ourselves and other universities, but making progress is always our goal.
